Let’s Talk About… Home

April 11

6-10 PM | Auditorium + Atrium

The current housing crisis has been decades in the making. Housing is about more than mere shelter; it is a deeply personal and highly political reflection of what (and who) we value. Governments, scholars, professionals, and citizens continually try to shape cities into their own visions of 'home.' Many of these visions exclude Indigenous peoples, poor, racialized, and other marginalized communities. The consequences and systemic inequities of these housing policies are still being lived today, and exacerbated by the convergence of other crises: affordability, health care, climate change, and social and political polarization.

On April 11, join our panellists as they discuss the need for housing as part of a healthy and equitable society, and explore ideas to tackle these challenges alongside communities and governments.

Panellists

Speaker: Ryan Hall - Ecottrust / Siksika Nation Housing

Speaker: Dustin Couzens - Principal MODA Architecture

Speaker: Dr. Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike - Writer & Poet

Speakers: Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski - WAI Architecture Think Tank

Moderator: Alicia Ta

CELLULOID CINEMA CAMP

16mm Lumens & Plants: Print, Process, Project

August 19& 20 | 12:00 – 6:00 PM

Over the summer of 2023, MONOGRAPH will facilitate a series of workshops in handmade celluloid cinema, instructed by local artist and analogue filmmaker Kyle Whitehead. Working with Super 8 and 16mm black and white materials, participants in these workshops will explore DIY methods and processes for making their own handmade motion picture films and will gain practical experience working with analogue cinema cameras, celluloid film material, eco-chemistry, hand-processing and will learn to cut and project their films on film using analogue editing and projection equipment. These courses are modular and designed to be discreet but complimentary, so participants can pick and choose topics that interest them most, or attend the entire series to develop a solid foundational knowledge of DIY analogue filmmaking practices. No previous experience is required for any of these courses and all equipment and materials will be provided.

This workshop will introduce participants to eco-processing and methods for making moving images on celluloid film entirely without the use of a camera or lens. As a group, we will explore the potentialities of lumen printing, and phytography which leverage the action of sunlight and the internal chemistry of plants to render high-contrast impressions and pastel colours on black and white film. Working with 16mm film, found or foraged materials and sundry chemicals that can be purchased at the grocery store we will explore the fundamental concepts of contact printing and working with organic and plant-based materials for film processing, spending two days experimenting with these methods hands-on. Finally, by the end of the second day, we will have the opportunity to see the images we’ve made, projected on 16mm film.

16mm Lumens & Plants : Print, Process, Project

August 19 & 20
12:00-6:00 PM

Registration fee: $150

About the Instructor

Kyle Whitehead is a Canadian artist who works with material film to create experimental and expanded cinema projects. His handmade films, moving image installations and projection performances trade in material self-consciousness, the artist’s labours and elastic treatments of light, space and time. Since 2007 he has realized more than 20 works in analogue film which have been exhibited internationally in numerous festivals, galleries and museums including CROSSROADS at the SF Cinematheque (USA), the Laboratorio Experimental de Cine (Mexico), Alchemy Film and Arts (Scotland), Antimatter Media Art (Canada), TRUCK Contemporary Art (Canada) and the Canadian Film Institute’s Café EX (Canada). In addition to his art practice Kyle has instructed university courses and workshops on analogue photography, video art and experimental filmmaking, is a former arts administrator and co-founder of Particle + Wave Festival of Media Art and facilitates MONOGRAPH, an ongoing series of experimental film screenings and workshops based in Southern Alberta, where he currently resides.

About MONOGRAPH

MONOGRAPH began in 2018 as an ongoing series of experimental film programs with a specific focus on analogue and handmade artist films. As Calgary, and Southern Alberta’s, only presenter dedicated entirely to experimental film, the series aims to elevate the local cinema community by exposing audiences to film artists and their works which are otherwise at risk of oversight in the region. After a short hiatus these programs are back and expanding to include technical and production activities, beginning with this Celluloid Cinema Camp series hosted by Contemporary Calgary.

DIY Super 8mm: Shoot, Process, Project

July 8 & 9 | 12:00 – 6:00 PM

No previous experience is required for any of these courses and all equipment and materials will be provided.

In this workshop participants will learn the essentials of working with Super 8 film, Kodak’s beloved home movie format which was first introduced in 1965. Super 8 cameras and projectors are plentiful and come in a variety of designs and forms, and there are more film stocks available today than there were when the format was first introduced more than 50 years ago. This incredible variety and accessibility is one of the most compelling reasons to love Super 8, but can also be a major source of frustration for the uninitiated. Participants in this course will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of Super 8 film and how to best approach their projects in this format to achieve excellent results. Working hands-on and as a group we will shoot and hand-process black and white Super 8 film using non-toxic, coffee based developer and explore analogue editing and projection on film. Equipment will be provided, but those who already have a Super 8 camera are encouraged to bring it along and become better acquainted with it.

In 2023, 16mm – the original small gauge film – is celebrating 100 years as the format of choice for artists and amateur filmmakers alike. This foundational workshop will provide a thorough introduction to the 16mm format including camera loading and operation, film stocks, exposure and various methods for processing, editing and projecting images, situating these DIY practices within the context of contemporary handmade cinema discourses. Working as a group and using spring drive cameras, and black and white film material, participants will gain hand-on experience loading and exposing film, and will hand-process reversal (positive) images using non-toxic, DIY chemistry. We will also discuss potential post-production work flows, including the possibilities for digitization and/or cutting and printing our physical materials by hand. By the end of the second day we will be able to project the positive images we’ve made on 16mm film.

While he considers practicing photography as an epistemological journey, most of his works focus on pedagogic, collaborative, and participatory arts with an eye on the meaning of perception. The key concept in practicing photography for him is confronting and understanding different perceptions. Following contemporary Art theories, he brings his photography classes to participatory pedagogic artworks. He thinks being an Art teacher and being an Artist simultaneously means producing as well as teaching.

Clay Workshop with Nurgül Rodriguez

Saturday, February 25th | 4:00-5:30 PM

Clay tablets are one of the most ancient writing mediums, serving as the earliest historical documents. In this workshop, Nurgül Rodriguez prompts us to think about immigration documents in general and the ‘Landing Paper’ that is issued to new immigrants in particular.

The workshop will involve making one’s own clay tablet, with each participant choosing a word or collection of words that resonate most with their sense of identity.

This workshop has been developed as an extension of Rodriguez’s installation- In a New Land… Be Longing, which is currently on view in the exhibition Human Capital.

Materials will be provided.

This workshop is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Human Capital, on view until April 16, 2023.

Saturday, February 25th

4:00-5:30pm

For adults ages 18+

Members: $10 /person
Non-members: $20 /person

About the artist,
Nurgül Rodriguez (she/her)

Nurgül Rodriguez is an artist with an interdisciplinary practice and a PhD student at Werklund School of Education. She has an active individual practice of disciplines and media including porcelain, installation, handmade paper, printmaking, three-dimensional pieces, and more recently socially engaged and collaborative projects. Her work is social, political and personal with a focus on issues of immigration, diasporas, borders and cultures. DIY Comic ZINE Workshop

Sunday, January 29th | 10:00-11:30 AM

We’re going to plan, fold and draw ourselves the perfect mini-zines for at-home publication! This workshop is presented in conjunction with the Chitra Ganesh: Astral Dance exhibition.

For ages 12+

Maximum capacity: 35 persons

About the facilitator,
Shea Proulx (she/her)

Shea Proulx has a BFA from Emily Carr and an MFA from The University of British Columbia. Her published books, Alice at Naptime and ABC Monstrosity, were both short-listed for the Best Illustrated Children’s Book category by the Alberta Book Publisher’s Association. Shea is a co-editor for Home, the first volume of the Alberta Comics Anthology, and Vice-President on the board of directors for a comic-creator festival called Panel One. Last year Shea was the proud recipient of a Canada Council grant in support of a series of paintings that feature surreal versions of environments she drew while sort-of also somehow supervising her children.

About the artist,
Chitra Ganesh (she/her)

Chitra Ganesh (b. 1975 Brooklyn, New York, USA) received a BA in Art-Semiotics and Comparative Literature from Brown University, Providence, RI in 1996. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2001 and received her MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University, NY in 2002. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

Through studies in literature, semiotics, social theory, science fiction, and historical and mythic texts, Ganesh attempts to reconcile representations of femininity, sexuality, and power absent from the artistic and literary canons. She often draws on Hindu and Buddhist iconography and South Asian forms such as Kalighat and Madhubani, and is currently negotiating her relationship to these images with the rise of right wing fundamentalism in India.

Flipbook Animation Workshop

Saturday, January 28th | 8:00-9:30 PM

We’re spending the evening watching Chitra Ganesh’s animations, while also testing our own skills as animators through doodling, and flip book making.

We’ll be asking ourselves some important questions: Whether things that appear in sequence always tell a story? How do we create mystery in our work? What can we gain by adding animated elements to two-dimensional work? And who here remembers Spy vs. Spy?

This workshop is presented in conjunction with the Chitra Ganesh: Astral Dance exhibition.

For adults ages 18+
Non-members: $20 /person
Members: $10 /person
Maximum capacity: 35 persons

Workshop supplies will be provided and also popcorn!

About the Artist

Nura Ali aims to create an awareness of how we are not users of language but shapers of it. This is done by thinking of translation as a way to understand that meaning is not fixed, but a reflection of the relationship between sensory input and ourselves as interpreters About Nura Nura Ali is a visual artist, writer and curator, living and working in Calgary, Alberta. She received a BFA in Visual Art from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, a BA in English Literature, Art History and Italian from the University of Leicester and a BA in History from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her wide-ranging practice investigates the linguistic scaffolding upholding the assumptions we bring to the act of reading and writing. Alongside her visual arts practice, Nura is also a prolific writer, a lifelong learner and has participated in various national and international residencies. Her work has been shown nationally and received numerous awards and grants; most recently from the Calgary Arts Development, the Rozsa Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts. When she is not curled up with a book or puttering around her garden, Nura is dreaming up ways to dismantle oppressive structures and for this reason, became one of the founding members of the Vancouver Artists Labour Union; a unionised workers cooperative whose mission it is to transform labour practises in the arts sector and create fair, equitable and sustainable working conditions for artists and cultural workers.

Isn’t the Fibre Universe Wonderful!

Free Fibre Workshop for Alberta Culture Days

cmsw-culturedays-wordmark-dusk.png

Saturday, Sep 18, 2021
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
(variable time slots)
Contemporary Calgary, Grotto Gallery

FREE with registration for ages 6 and up, under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

This is an in-person program. Masks are mandatory and will be made available at our welcome desk. Physical distancing will be maintained in seating arrangements.

This easy-to-understand fibre workshop facilitated by artists Richard Boulet and Marilyn Olson, focusses on a playful and stress-free attitude to material exploration. Participants receive a variety of easy-to-handle fibre-related materials and are guided on creating their own artwork. Once you’ve registered you can decide on your time of arrival, and how long you wish to stay.

Participants can also bring their own materials to use themselves and/or share. Think of ribbons and bows, buttons and beads, a favourite scrap of fabric, a sentimental small object, a rather eccentric looking yarn or two: the list is endless. The word “concoction” comes to mind: and let us not forget the word “joy”. Isn’t the fibre universe wonderful!

Funded by Alberta Culture Days, this workshop is produced by SITE c PROJECTS, the creative arm of OBAD (Organization for Bipolar Affective Disorders). Also in attendance at the workshop will be OBAD Executive Director Kaj Korvela, SITE c PROJECTS founder Anthony Preston, and curator Dick Averns.

Workshop participants are welcome to bring their own snacks, food and beverages: there is no food or drink vending on site. This is an in-person program. Masks are mandatory encouraged and will be made available at our welcome desk. Physical distancing will be maintained in seating arrangements, and Contemporary Calgary will maintain a vigorous cleaning schedule.

Richard Boulet and Marilyn Olson will be exhibiting later in the fall at Contemporary Calgary in Perspectives From Within, curated through SITE c PROJECTS by Dick Averns. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Workshop Facilitators Introduce Themselves…

Richard Boulet

I was born in Alberta and moved to Winnipeg to study architecture and then art. Through my drawing and fibre practice I address issues of marginalization, specifically mental health and concerns relating to LGBTQ+ communities.

The completion of graduate studies resulted in exhibiting my fibre art nationally, and I have been fortunate to have worked a wide range of jobs in the arts. Many years ago I was diagnosed with schizophrenia and since then have adopted artistic strategies that embrace mental health.

I am doing well these days, and both Marilyn and I feel it is important to disclose that we live with mental illness. Collaboration helps reduce stigma and allows for new pathways to making art.

Marilyn Olson

Most of my life has been spent in the Edmonton area, although I lived in Calgary for twelve years when I began my accounting career. I also have experience in the garment industry but making art is new to me.

In 2017 I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and a few other disorders. I have been struggling with my mental wellness since my late teens.

Richard and I have been working together since May 2019 and I am now finding my voice as an artist as I realize how my craft becomes art.

Omar Ba, Same Dream, 2018.

Omar Ba, Same Dream, 2018.

Youth Workshop
For youth ages 15–25.

Inspiring young people through the exploration of contemporary art, and connecting them to community, global, and social issues that affect all of our lives.

Join us February 26, 2021
5PM – 7PM!

This program is hosted on Zoom by invitation through Action Dignity.

For questions or more information please email Krizia Carlos:
krizia.carlos@actiondignity.org

Omar Ba’s work engages with some of the most urgent issues of our time: the growing inequality of wealth and power globally, forced migration and our changing relationship with the natural world. His penchant for depicting personal narratives alongside collective ones speaks to the in-between condition of his work, as he splits his time between Dakar, Senegal and Geneva, Switzerland, and blends the visual texture of both places through his practice. Ba draws from and intertwines a range of elements— the historical and contemporary, figurative and abstract imagery—from African and European cultures.

Same Dream brings together several of Ba’s paintings depicting dictators and authority figures, who lead corrupt and violent regimes across the African continent and in other parts of the world, particularly where the legacies of colonialism persist.
