// Homecoming is a major solo exhibition of paintings by this rapidly rising art talent. The artist, now residing in Toronto, grew up in Red Deer, Alberta. The exhibition, selected by the artist and Artistic Director, Jeffrey Spalding reflects many of the poignant formative moments in his early adulthood in this province. Recently his work was the subject of a highly acclaimed solo exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Collection. Contemporary Calgary and the McMichael are collaborating upon an accompanying monograph concerning Dorland’s art, to be launched in November of 2014.

ABOUT KIM DORLAND

// Kim Dorland pushes the boundaries of painted representation through an exploration of memory, material, nostalgia, identity and place. Drawing heavily from the Canadian landscape, lived experience and his huge appetite for the history and language of painting, Dorland’s loose yet identifiable scenes are interjected with areas of heavy abstract impasto, adding to the raw, fleeting quality of his canvases.

Born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta, Dorland holds an MFA from York University in Toronto, Ontario, and a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He has exhibited globally, including shows in Milan, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. His work is featured in The Sander Collection (Berlin); Montréal Museum of Fine Arts; Musee D’Art Contemporain De Montreal; The Glenbow Museum (Calgary); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and numerous private collections. Dorland currently works in Toronto, where he lives with his wife, Lori, and his two children Seymour and Thomson.
